Master class from DRC

25/01/2015

Although rather early in the year for many people to be thinking about racing, the Scottish Masters Relay championships is always a popular event and this year was no exception with 80 teams entered, of which 3 were from Dumfries Running Club...

The route is 3.7 mile lap of the loch in Strathclyde Park, mainly flat but with some cheeky turns and small hills. Both ladies' and men's races start simultaneously, but the male teams have four laps to run against the ladies' three.

Some last minute substitutions due to injury mean that the team of Lisa Finlay, Sian Finlay and Jo Zakrzewski (who won the event 3 years ago) were back in action again today. Lisa set the girls up with a fast first leg, and Sian took the ladies up into pole position with her second leg, while Jo anchored them home to regain the title three and a half minutes ahead of the next ladies' team.

The DRC MV50 team were quietly confident of a strong performance, and Jim Buchanan led them off in style. He handed over to Kevin McCaig, followed by Sandy Shankland with Ian Liffen anchoring the team home to win the MV50 event (and finish 11th overall).

Jacob Tangey led off the open men's team, handing on the baton to Alan Baxter as the drizzle set in. Les Hill took the third leg chasing Sandy round the loch, with Steve Mohan anchoring the team home in 22nd position.

Jo and Lisa ran the second and third fastest ladies' legs, but the most kudos went to Ian Liffen who came home with an individual trophy as the fastest MV50 runner on the day.

Jo.
