Barcelona 12 Hour Track race

20/12/2014

Vicky Hart had plans for one more race in 2014 and travelled to Barcelona to take part in the 12 hours track race held as part of the annual Ultra festival. Vicky reports on her run as follows...

"Whilst most people were already winding down for Christmas I was focusing on one final race for 2014. I travelled out to Barcelona to take part in the annual Ultra Festival that is held at the Pistes D'Atletisme de Can Drago. I had entered the 12 Hour track race. I wanted to be able to complete an ultramarathon before the end of the year so that I had run one the same year as having Daniel.

Unfortunately I suffered a chest infection in the weeks before the race so I hadn't been able to build up any distance from my marathon training. My expectations going into the race were therefore not high.  I knew it was going to be extremely painful and so my only goal was to make sure I got the finishers medal so that I could say I had run an ultramarathon in 2014.

There were many times when I wanted to stop once I'd passed the marathon distance (which I managed to complete faster than I ran the TUI Marathon Palma de Mallorca back in October!) but a combination of never-ending support from Susan Gallagher (who was crewing for me), a mid-race phone call home to Paul, and sheer determination not to be beaten by the race I was able to complete over 61 miles and finished 4th lady in the 12 hour race. I don't think I have ever been so relieved to finish a race.  And I was so pleased that I had been able to complete so many miles having not run further than a marathon for over 18 months prior to the race.

Huge thanks are due to Susan, Paul and the rest of the GB support crew that were at the track for the race."
