Brampton to Carlisle 10 mile race

16/11/2014

Last Sunday 21 members of Dumfries Running Club took part in one of the blue riband events on the local racing circuit, the 63rd Brampton to Carlisle 10 mile road race...

Hosting the North of England Championship, the race always attracts a high quality field and this year was also the final counter in the DRC Grand Prix series of races.

On an ideal day with clear crisp and warm conditions it was no surprise that the race has its highest turnout in years with 646 finishers, an increase of 100 from last year. The fastest DRC performer, gaining maximum points, was Steven Smith who was 27th overall in a very high quality field in 57.42. Male club captain Alan Baxter had a superb run to improve his personal best to 57.59, well over a minute quicker than last year. Niall Campbell, in his longest ever race had an excellent run and was pleased to finish bang on the 60 minute mark. In a high class field this trio finished as 7th team overall.

Kevin McCaig ran very well in 61.37 and finished well clear of Graeme Cross in 63.16 with Sandy Shankland in 63.58. Les Hill produced a very good run in 65.52 on what proved to be a landmark occasion for him. As a prolific racer who has helped mentor and guide Dumfries Running Club members over the years, this marked his 800th career race. This landmark was celebrated after the race when he was presented with a cake to commemorate this prodigious achievement.

Allan Manson did well in 68.14 as did Stephen Mohan in 69.34 and Sian Finlay in 70.08 and Sarah Queen on her first club race for several months performed well in 73.12.

Mike Jardine has benefitted from extra training recently and ran very brightly in 75.03 and one of the performances of the day came from Kerry Walker who knocked almost 5 minutes from her previous best time in 77.37. The team of Sian, Sarah and Kerry were placed as 6th female team out of 19.

Frank Skachill did well in 78.45 as did Richard McDougal in 80.33. Female club captain Margaret Gray had a superb personal best in 83.43 and Fiona Jardine put in another strong run in 85.13 closely followed by Susan Callander in a personal best performance in 85.57. Donald Anson ran brightly in 91.51 and turned back the years by improving on last year’s run by over 3 minutes and Gemma Leadbetter and Margaret Laurie ran stretches of the route in close proximity, with Gemma in 98.37 just over 100 metres in front of Margaret.

Thanks are due to Ian Liffin, Danny Queen and Theresa Lavery for their on course support for their club mates.

Steve Mohan
