The 3 peaks Ultra, Jedburgh

25/10/2014

On Saturday October 25th Frank Skachill joined a field of 132 in the three peaks 38 mile ultra run in Jedburgh...

The route is a mixture of some road, track, path and hill running and passes through some of the most iconic and beautiful Border countryside. Starting at Jedburgh Abbey, the gentle opening 10 miles follows redundant railway lines and the pathway used by St Cuthbert on his way to Holy Island. From there the runners followed the river Tweed towards St Boswells before climbing over the 3 peaks of the Eildon hills with fabulous panoramic views over the whole region before returning  to Jedburgh.

Ultra races suit a steady and meticulous approach. Frank, along with Sean McMinn were careful with their preparations and knew that a slow start would give them every chance of success in the later stages. With a chilly 8am start there was good weather throughout the day which resulted in dry conditions under foot. Frank managed to overcome a shoe malfunction early in the race and was grateful for the improvisation of a member of the supporting mountain rescue team which allowed him to continue and complete the course. In the end Frank thoroughly enjoyed the challenge and finished in 8 hours 21 and Sean, who ran most of the way with him pulled away towards the end to complete the course in 8 hours 10.
