Neil McCover Half Marathon

05/10/2014

On Sunday, 5th October, Les Hill returned to Kirkintilloch for his second Neil McCover Half Marathon, confident of beating last year’s time of 95 minutes but not so confident of beating his targeted 91 minutes. He reports as to how he got on....

On the start line he met an old friend and former GB & NI teammate, Robert Wilson of Greenock Glenpark Harriers. After the first mile, Les found that Robert was setting a pace that was perfect for his target and ran steadily 10 metres behind him.

However, around half way Robert’s pace dropped so Les moved ahead and encouraged Robert to tuck in behind and he duly did so.

This was again of assistance to Les as both were constantly encouraging each other and with 100 metres to go they decided to cross the line together in recognition of how each had benefitted from the other.

They finished 37th equal in 88 minutes 59 seconds and managed this with a good negative split (the second half being 90 seconds faster than the first). Les' final time was well within the 91 minutes required to achieve the age graded gold standard.
