Coniston Trail Challenge

04/10/2014

On Saturday 4th October, Susan Graham travelled down to Coniston to take part in the tenth anniversary running of the Lakeland Trails Coniston Trail Challenge race...

The race starts at Coniston Hall and heads to Coniston Village along a very flat path. However once in the village the climbing starts and continues past the Miners Bridge and up into Coppermines Valley where there is a short respite before hitting the serious technical trail. The previous night's very wet and wild weather had made the underfoot conditions extremely slippery, so much care was needed. However, despite a short sharp and rather cold downpour, the weather during the race was generally rather fine, enabling the runners to appreciate the wonderful scenery.

Susan found that once the initial climb was over it was easy to get into a good rhythm, which she managed to maintain until the penultimate mile. Here the route takes the runners down a very wet and rocky woodland path, where unlike the runners in the trail race who had started to hurtle at breakneck speed past her, she felt it prudent to take it more gingerly in the hope of making it to the bottom in one piece. The remainder of the race was a flat mile or so along the lakeside to the finish back at Coniston Hall.

Susan was extremely pleased to discover that she had completed the distance just over 4 minutes faster, and feeling much fresher, than on any of her previous outings at this event.
