Two Breweries Hill Race

27/09/2014

This is an 18 mile run in the beautiful Scottish Borders from Traquair House in Innerleithen to Broughton, and contains over 4,900 feet of climb. Jacob Tangey represented Dumfries Running Club in the 31st edition and reports as follows...

"The quote of the day was “heather was not made for running through and I was not made for running through it!” from an HBT runner, and it echoed my thoughts exactly.

Running 18 miles between Traquair and Broughton breweries is well deserving of the beer at the end.  There were 3 steep climbs and even steeper descents, some contouring along boggy sheep tracks while worrying that a dodgy step will send you rolling down to the bottom of the hill (so needing to climb back outagain), and I cannot say I found this race particularly satisfying (not that very much training was involved).

However, the day was stunning, with gorgeous views up and down the valleys, and at my pace I could afford to stop and look around every now and again. The course is a good mix of trail, heather and bog (these bits aren’t so brilliant but make it a hill race), forest road and a little bit of bitumen with some really fast running sections, if legs have not been turned to jelly by the first descent (as mine were)!  It is definitely a race to test your legs in the hills if you want to step up the distance.

All in all I managed 3:48.48, 74th place and a set of trashed legs -  all fun and games, not forgetting the beer at the end."
