The High Peak 40, Buxton

20/09/2014

On 20th September, Les Hill returned to the High Peak 40 hoping to get close to his previous time of 6 hours 45 minutes. This 40 miles race is part of the Runfurther Trail series which Les has set as his main goal for 2014...

This time round he set off at a steady and slower pace than before but was pleasantly surprised to find himself in 10th place as he passed through the first two check points.

However, on his way to check point 3, as he followed the 2010 route, he discovered that a shorter path had now been introduced and with all other competitors going the shorter way he found himself to be 24th after 9 miles.

His position changed regularly as he gained on any climbs, and with almost 5,000 feet of ascent there were many, but would lose some places on the descents. On arrival at the checkpoint that was around marathon distance he was 22nd in 4 hours 22 minutes. From this point to the finish he gained another five places, grinding out the miles while others were walking on slight inclines.

Les finished eight minutes slower than his previous run over this route but was delighted with 17th place out of 180 runners. He also collected the medal for second vet 50. The race winner was ex DRC member Marcus Scotney in 5 hours 21 minutes.
