Ben Nevis Hill Race

06/09/2014

On Saturday 6th September, 4 hardy DRC runners made the annual pilgrimage to Fort William for the Ben Nevis hill race. Craig Malcolmson's report follows...

The venue Claggan Park, race start time 1pm, weather promising!  Mo Khan, Sebastian Pflanz, Ranjit Thomas and Craig Malcolmson lined up with around 500 other hill runners for the out and back trek to the summit at 4,406ft and 14Km (8.7miles) distance.

The run has it all, 1.8 miles of tarmac, walkers paths, muddy banks, scree and boulder fields to contend with on the way to the summit. At the top runners have to hand over their race numbered wrist band which is to prove the actually got there, then with a handful of jelly babies from the marshals, turn for the painful descent from the highest point in UK back to the start which doubles as the finish. On the descent runners not only find themselves running back into fellow runners still to reach the summit but tourists as well.. it becomes a bit like skittles, but trying not to take out too many!

First Dumfries runner home was Craig in a time of 2:10:56, 146th place and a PB by nearly 2mins. Second home was Sebastian who had a flawless run to record a time 2:19:27 for 207th place and a PB by around 3 minutes, showing that his descending has come on leaps and bounds.

Next up was Ranjit, ("I don't know what shoes to wear"), who again put in a solid race to record a time of 2:34:44 and 305th place. Completing the Dumfries quartet with the performance of the day was Mo in 443rd place who showed he'd been putting in the effort and knocked over 9 minutes from his previous Ben Nevis time to narrowly miss getting a sub 3 hour time by 34 secs.

The DRC runners all agreed it was a great day with exceptional weather which can often be grim and gave special thanks to chief photographer and supporter Peter Hutchison. A post race discussion was held by all DRC runners on the race and concluded that the reason why only Ranjit didn't record a PB was as he wore the WRONG SHOES!

Craig.
