The Blackwood Trail 10k

28/08/2014

The Blackwood Trail 10K took place on Sunday 24th and saw 21 Club members take part. The runners were no doubt very appreciative of the excellent post race refreshments laid on by organiser Frank Skachill and his team, but judging by the accompanying photo, they would have perhaps been a little less impressed by the primitive showering facilities!...

Steve Mohan's report follows...

Now bedded in as a welcome addition to the local racing circuit the 4th running of the Blackwood 10k trail race last Sunday had ideal conditions of sunshine and dry weather for those eager to test themselves on one of the more challenging, yet technical races. With a long steady climb after the start at the Auldgirth Inn, the runners entered the Blackwood estate with a network of forest tracks that provided a stiff test in the first half yet opened out to allow smoother running in the second section of the race.

Organiser Frank Skachill managed a coup by not only getting landowner Richard Gladwin to allow the race on his land he actually persuaded him to take part in the race itself. In all 21 members of Dumfries Running Club took part along with several who helped with timing and placing.

Race winner Greig Glendinning of Bellahouston was well clear of the field in 39.49 and welcome returnee Terry McCluskey raced back into form in second place in 42.12 and managed to hold off Kevin McQueen by barely 20 seconds. In a trio of close finishes Ranjit Thomas had an excellent run in 5th in 44.19 and he nudged ahead of Simon Mortlock by 23 seconds with Sandy Shankland a further 14 seconds adrift.

Warming up for the upcoming Ben Nevis hill race Craig Malcolmson ran well in 9th in 47.07 and former Dumfries Academy student Miranda Singleton had a superb run as first woman in 51.05, overtaking Stephen Mohan in the second half of the race. With local knowledge of the terrain Frank Skachill had a strong run in 53.49 and Linda Oates had a strong steady run in 58.46. Fiona Jardine in 61.13 ran well and stayed over 2 minutes clear of Christina Adamson with Sid Oates a further ninety seconds behind.

Jo Pennington ran well in 68.38 to stay narrowly in front of both Mike Jardine and Alison Groat who were navigationally challenged and managed to add an extra mile and a half to their race but caught up with Margaret Laurie to encourage her to the line in 69.19. Club Chairman Peter Hutchison had a very encouraging run in 75.57 in his fightback from injury and female club captain Margaret Gray did her run the hard way by doing her usual group training run at 9am then taking part in the race two hours later where she encouraged both Gemma Leadbetter and Gerry Edgar in their fitness programmes for the upcoming Dumfries half marathon.

After excellent post-race refreshments of an outdoor barbeque for all, organiser Frank Skachill showed his unique sense of style by entertaining those present by submitting to an ice bucket challenge, raising charity money in the process.
