Lotus Hill Race

05/06/2014

The 2014 DRC Hill Championship was held on Thursday June 5th on Lotus Hill. The earlier rain cleared to leave a fine summer's evening enjoyed by the 17 runners, marshals and midgies alike...

Unfortunately for the hill runners who had reccied the traditional race route, the course used was the previous year's longer route of 4.5 miles, but luckily the marshals ensured that nobody got lost. The forest road was relatively dry, but the rain of the previous few days made for an interesting run through the trees contouring round the hill. Deep bogs were almost hidden by the long grass, so several runners suddenly found themselves trying to drag their feet out of knee-deep mud. The runners ducked under tree branches and leaped across streams before they started to climb the hill itself. A wave at the summit marshal, and they headed off back down to rejoin the forest road. The descent was rather wet, and though several of the ladies managed to keep relatively clean, many of the men ended up covered from head to toe in mud as they hurtled headlong off the top. The final stretch along the forest road to the finish became a race against the midgies on tired legs.

The top few positions did not change from when the runners headed off the forest road, with Alan Baxter leading them all home and so winning the championship, with Richard Beck and Terry McCloskey in 2nd and 3rd places respectively. Jo Zakrzewski headed the ladies field, with Sue Jeffrey and Alison Groat in 2nd and 3rd places. A sprint finish saw Simon Mortlock take the first veteran male slot, with Fiona Jardine as first lady veteran.

Thanks go to race organiser Ranjit Thomas and his band of marshals/timekeepers (Les Hill, Doug Brown, Stephen Mohan, Alan McKean, Mo Khan, Peter Hutchinson).
