Latrigg Fell Race

14/05/2014

The Latrigg Fell race is one of the longest running fell races in the Lake District. This year, as in previous years, it has been the opening event for the Keswick Mountain Festival which takes place every May. Dumfries Running Club was represented by Mo Khan and Sue Jeffrey, with Sue reporting as follows....

"The DRC runners taking part were fortunate to have another evening of perfect weather down in the Lake District, with clear summits all around. The race starts and finishes in Fitz Park with a quick sprint through the park to the foot of Latrigg and a very steep ascent to the top. The route skirts around the side of the fell before finally reaching the summit cairn after approximately 300m of ascent. After the tough grind to get to the summit, runners are rewarded with a rapid decent down the fell and a scramble through the trees. Previous years have seen considerably wetter conditions, making the descent somewhat more interesting, however the dryer conditions prior to race day allowed for a quick descent without bum-sliding all the way to the bottom. The final stage rejoins the road and a sprint back to the park. The race was won by accomplished Salomon UK fell, trail and ultra runner Ricky Lightfoot in a time of 17.54. Having already climbed Helvellyn earlier that day, Mo was pleased to finish in a time of 28.27. Not too far behind was Sue who finished in 29:39 and was very happy to finish under 30minutes after having raced in the Women’s 10k on Sunday and Holywood Stroll the previous night. Thanks go to Mo’s fiancée Lucy and Sue’s dad Steve for their support on the night."
