Great Lakeland 3 Day

03/05/2014

On the May bank holiday weekend Susan Graham took part in the GL3D, a small friendly mountain marathon held in the Lake District...

As the name suggests, the event is run over three days and is split into classes which this year included Elite, A, B and the new C class for slower runners/walkers.

Susan and her team mate Kim thoroughly enjoyed their 3 days of navigating their way across a fair selection of very varied and interesting terrain. The pair even managed to come to the aid of another competitor who in Susan's words "was ever so slightly lost on the top of Wether Hill", so he just joined them for the remainder of the event.

Day 1 started with a surprise ferry ride across Ullswater for a start at Howtown. The route took the team up Fusedale and onto High Street, taking in High Raise, High Street, Mardale Ill Bell, Harter Fell, Kentmere Pike and on to the finish at the first overnight camp in the Kentmere Valley.

Day 2 was an easier day with a low level route across to Troutbeck and on through Ambleside, familiar territory for both of the team as it forms part of the Lakeland 50 route, then onto Grasmere to reach overnight camp 2 in  beautiful Easedale.

Day 3 for Susan was the hardest, with a steep climb up to Grisedale Hause,  past Grisedale Tarn and down into Patterdale which was tough on tired legs. There then came a sting in the tail with the competitors having to endure a last five miles run back to Howtown along a rocky, tree rooted path. However all hardship was forgotten when Team Susan and Kim (plus one) made it to the finish in time to check in and get the free ferry ride back to Pooley Bridge.

Both thoroughly enjoyed a brilliant weekend which was excellently organised and run by Shane Ohly and his team.
