Glasgow Women's 10K

11/05/2014

An impressive turnout of 21 Dumfries Running Club members took part in last Sunday’s Glasgow Womens 10k...

With a field of over 8,000 this race is one of the largest of its kind in the UK and for a large number of those who take part the emphasis is on fun, friendship and fitness. The race ethos of a supportive environment encourages the best from everyone who takes part and the fabulous support marks this race as special with the bagpipes and music at each kilometre marker putting a spring into the step of even the most foot weary runner.

Of the Club runners, the quickest performance came from Sue Jeffrey who was 137th in an excellent 47.07 and Michelle McCrindle in 52.03 gained a PB in 507th place. Fiona Jardine in 53.36 also had an excellent run and will gain confidence for the Edinburgh marathon on May 25th. Kirsteen Kellock in 54.32 had another strong run as did Satpal Burns who was more than delighted with one of the runs of the day, along with womens club captain Margaret Gray in 54.38 and Louise Brown and Mandy Goldie used their experience from regular running at the Monday night sessions at the club to good effect with Louise in 54.47 just under a minute in front of Mandy.

Helen Pedley recovered well from last month’s London marathon to record a time of 56.25, two seconds yet thirteen places in front of Paula Craven. Theresa Lavery has not been able to put in much training recently yet still performed well in 56.34 and Caroline Frieslick in 58.23 was delighted to have completed her first club race since last year’s London marathon. Margaret Laurie in 58.55 warmed up for the Edinburgh marathon on the 25th with the final race in her training programme.

In her first race of any description, Heather Young in 60.41 finished a couple of minutes in front of Karen Hodgson. Helen Paisley in 64.10 used her experience of this race to guide Fiona Parker and Tracey Dalziel round their debut races and Shirley Dugan and Vanessa Marsh showed commitment and dedication as novices to complete distances much further than either has tackled before.
