21st Holywood Stroll

13/05/2014

Over the 21 years it has been run, the race has gone from strength to  strength and with the best results team in the business, Sandy and Linda Shankland, along with Audrey Brown, aided by a whole host of helpers from Dumfries Running Club making sure things went smoothly, this year's event proved to be the best yet...

Early indications were that that the previous record entry of 120 would be challenged but once the long line of entrants were processed the sheer volume of participants meant that start of the race had to be delayed simply to accommodate the numbers wishing to take part. In all an extraordinary 192 people of all standards crossed the finish line, from those aiming for the sharp end of the field to a large number in their first ever organised race.

One superb feature of the race was the large turnout of local clubs, particularly the brand new Dalbeattie Running Club, kitted out in smart new tops for their first ever club race, who brought over 30 to take part.

Craig Reid of Bellahouston Road Runners, who was 2nd in last year’s Dumfries Half Marathon, went one better in 27.09 to finish 24 seconds in front of Steven Smith of the host club with a newcomer, David Sloan of Dumfries Tri club having an excellent run in third in 28.08.

The male team prize was won by DRC with Steven, Alan Baxter and Richard Beck in 2nd, 4th and 5th respectively.

The run of the evening came from Lisa Finlay of the who broke the course record in 28.56 for 6th place overall and combined with her sister Sian and Amy Beck made it a clean sweep of the team prizes for DRC. The high standard of the race was shown by the fact that 16 runners were faster than half an hour with 6 minute miles, a benchmark of quality.

The male vet 40 prize went to 7th placed Kevin Conchar in 29.30 and the vet 50 to Kevin McCaig in 30.31. On the female side Mhairi Duff was a welcome returnee to local races as 2nd woman in 31.20 with Emma Knowles of Dumfries Harriers third in 34.18. The first female vet prize went to Donna Burnett of Dalbeattie RC in 34.32 with first supervet female Janet Priestley of Annan in 38.47. A special prize went to John McRoberts in 31.01 who was the fastest Dalbeattie runner in their inaugural race.
