Screel Hill race

12/04/2014

Saturday April 12 was the day of the second race in the Dumfries and Galloway Hill Running Championship. Many people underestimate Screel Hill Race when they hear that it is only 3.5 miles long, but it is not for the faint-hearted as it involves over 1,300 feet of ascent and descent...

The morning's rain and wind did not deter 7 runners from Dumfries Running Club from making the trip out to Palnackie. Race organisers Dougie Milligan and Bob Green had been forced to change the route slightly due to fallen trees from the gales earlier in the year, which meant that there was slightly more forest road, but then the hill climb was steeper. Finish timers Dougie Brown and Sheena Green estimated that runners were on average a minute slower on the new course.

The race was won by James Howarth of Galloway Harriers in 30:51 with ladies winner Charlotte Morgan of Carnethy finishing 3rd overall in 33:48.

Fastest DRC runner was Craig Malcolmson whose local knowledge of the route enabled him to have a fantastic descent, earning him the V40 prize as he finished in 6th place overall in a time of 35:09. Jo Zakrzewski ascended strongly to reach the summit ridge in 3rd place overall, but her tentative descending meant that she finished in 11th place (2nd lady) in 37:30. Seb Pflanz reeled Jo in on the descent but she escaped him on the forestry road; however, he pushed on and caught her again on the next technical section to finish in 12th place in 37:44. Mo Khan came home next, with another DRC battle occurring just behind him. Steven Bonn chased Sue Jeffrey right down to the line but she managed to pip him by a second with Kerry Walker rounding off the club contingent 4 places back.

Luckily for the runners, the weather cleared up during the race, so although they all returned completely covered in mud, they got to enjoy the warmth of a sunny spell as they descended. The marshals at the finish were not so lucky, as they remained under the cover of trees the whole time, but all enjoyed the drinks and cakes provided afterwards.
