Longtown 10 mile road race

05/04/2014

The misty mizzly weather didn't deter 19 members of DRC from participating in the 2nd running of the Longtown 10, the second race in the club's 2014 road race Grand Prix...

Prior warning from those club members who had raced there the previous year meant that most people started steadily rather than going off too fast as had been the case in 2013.

The route heads out of Longtown towards Penton on the open roads and it is definitely a race of two (rather uneven) halves. The course description mentions a gradual climb leading up to the last 4 miles of downhill. This is slightly misleading as, although there is a net climb of about 460 feet, there are definitely some steep undulations, with a noticeable sharp descent and ascent to the 5th mile marker. The route profile meant that most runners managed to negative split the race, thought the "downhill 4 miles" were slightly tempered by the fact that they were run into a headwind and some rain. The course is a quiet one out into the open countryside, but Peter Hutchinson and Doug Brown made appearances at various points of the course to cheer the DRC members on.

The race was won in 55:51 by Russell Maddams of Keswick AC, but first home for the club (and 4th overall) was Steven Smith in 58:34. Next back, and first lady, was Jo Zakrzewski in 7th place (61:12), though she was nearly caught by Richard Beck's sprint (61:24). Sian Finlay (3rd lady) was an agonising 2 seconds away from her 73 minute target, while Sandy Shankland took home the 2nd V50 prize (66:06). Peter Hill took advantage of the age groups to win the first V60 prize in 78:22.
